A forgotten convolution type identity of Catalan

Abstract

The derivation of an obscure, though nonetheless interesting, identity involving Catalan numbers is presented which is mathematically faithful to its publication in the 1880s. Drawing on earlier analysis by himself and others, Catalan released this work towards the end of his life having maintained an involvement in ideas on which he had first written half a century previously.
