Characters of the symmetric groups and plethysm of S-functions

Abstract

In this paper we give a brief survey of the existing methods of calculating the characters of symmetric groups then present a new formula for the calculation of ordinary characters of the symmetric groups using the properties of symmetric functions. This leads to a more efficient method of calculating the plethysm and Kronecker products of S-functions. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification: 05E05, 05E10.
